In solidarity with the Lenca People

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) expresses solidarity with the Lenca people and Rio Blanco communities in Honduras, rejecting a report by the FMO regarding the Agua Zarca hydro-electric project and condemning the violence and impunity facing land defenders.

• The document links the murder of Berta Cáceres, leaders of the COPINH and MILPAH movements, and crimes against the Tolupan people, as well as high rates of feminicide and torture, to the consequences of inequitable Trade Agreements with the United States and Europe.
• ATALC calls upon the Netherlands, Spain, and Finland—as the headquarters and majority shareholders of the financial backers of Agua Zarca and other Honduran dams—to cease financing projects in Latin America that breach human rights.
• The statement condemns the theft of the judicial file regarding the murder of Berta Cáceres in Tegucigalpa, describing the event as a serious obstruction to justice.
