Anniversaire de l’assassinat de Berta Cáceres

A statement by Friends of the Earth International commemorating the first anniversary of the murder of Berta Cáceres, an indigenous Lenca activist killed for defending the Gualcarque river against dam construction in Honduras.

• Berta Cáceres, an activist from the indigenous Lenca people, was killed on March 2 in her home in La Esperanza, Honduras. Her death was a result of her leadership in the collective struggle of the Lencas and the COPINH to protect their forests, rivers, and lands from the threat of six dams on the Gualcarque river.
• Friends of the Earth International links the protection of territories to a struggle against capitalist and patriarchal systems. The organization asserts that as transnational corporations accumulate capital by privatizing biodiversity, forests, and water reserves, women face increasing levels of institutionalized repression and violence.
• Friends of the Earth International committed during its 2016 biennial General Assembly to work toward dismantling the patriarchy, viewing this as essential for systemic change. This includes fighting against the exploitation of women's reproductive and productive labor and all forms of violence used to control women's bodies and lives.
• From March 2 to March 8, 2017, member groups of Friends of the Earth International planned a week of action to denounce violence against women and communities, specifically targeting capitalist control of territories and patriarchal oppression.
