Anniversary of Berta Cáceres’ murder

A statement by Friends of the Earth International marking the first anniversary of the murder of Lenca Indigenous activist Berta Cáceres, linking the defense of territories against corporate exploitation to the broader struggle against patriarchy and capitalism.

• Berta Cáceres, a Lenca Indigenous activist, was murdered on March 2, 2016, in La Esperanza, Honduras, due to her leadership in the collective struggle of COPINH and the Lenca People to protect their lands, forests, and rivers from the threat of six hydroelectric dams on the Gualcarque River.
• Friends of the Earth International asserts that the exploitation of the environment and the oppression of women are linked through a capitalist and patriarchal system. Corporate activities such as land grabbing, the privatization of community-managed forests and biodiversity, and the appropriation of water sources lead to increased systemic violence and repression against women.
• Friends of the Earth International committed at its 2016 Biennial General Assembly to dismantle patriarchy as a necessary step for system change, specifically fighting the exploitation of women's reproductive and productive work and all forms of violence used to control women's bodies and lives.
• From March 2 to March 8, 2017, Friends of the Earth International member groups and allies planned a week of action to expose perpetrators of violence against women and communities and to protest the capitalist control of territories and patriarchal oppression.
