Preocupación por la seguridad del testigo de la muerte de Berta Cáceres

Friends of the Earth International expresses concern for the physical integrity of Gustavo Castro Soto, a coordinator for Otros Mundos Chiapas /Amigos de la Tierra México, following the assassination of indigenous leader Berta Cáceres in Honduras.

• The international community is demanding a transparent investigation into the murder of Berta Cáceres and guarantees for the physical safety of Gustavo Castro Soto. Castro Soto, a coordinator for Otros Mundos Chiapas /Amigos de la Tierra México, was in La Esperanza, Intibucá, conducting alternative energy analysis workshops with the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH).
• Berta Cáceres co-founded the COPINH in 1993 and led environmental protests against hydroelectric projects in western Honduras, arguing that such projects threatened the natural and cultural heritage of the Lenca people.
• Demonstrations for the clarification of Berta Cáceres' crime and the safe return of Gustavo Castro Soto began in Mexico City at the Embassy of Honduras, with further global protests planned at embassies in the following week.
