Solidarity for missing environmental activist Miguel Ángel

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement on November 9, 2012, expressing alarm over the disappearance of Miguel Ángel Pabón Pabón, a Colombian environmental activist and leader of the social movement for the defense of the Sogamoso River.

• Miguel Ángel Pabón Pabón, a 36-year-old environmentalist and father of two, disappeared on October 31, 2012. He founded the Social Movement for the Defense of the Sogamoso River in 2008 to raise awareness about the negative impacts of local hydro-electrical projects and protested against the company ISAGEN regarding labor conditions and social-environmental consequences for peasant and fisherfolk communities. In 2011, he helped establish the Columbian Movement in Defense of the Territory and Affected People by Dams “Ríos Vivos”.
• The disappearance of Miguel Ángel Pabón Pabón occurs within a pattern of violence against social leaders in the Sogamoso River region. According to the Observatorio de Paz Integral, 11 people disappeared in 2012, with 6 later found dead, and several social leaders have been assassinated since 2009. The document states these crimes have been committed with total impunity.
• Friends of the Earth International has called upon various Colombian authorities to locate Pabón Pabón and ensure his safe return. The entities specifically named include the Magdalena Medio Police, the National Attorney General, the Ombudspeople, the Municipality of San Vicente, and the Regional Attorney.
