This report by Friends of the Earth International, authored by Professor Doreen Stabinsky, examines how the fossil fuel sector attempts to expand the voluntary carbon market to sustain a fossil fuel-based economy.

• The demand for carbon offsets is expected to increase significantly due to several factors: the authorization of a global carbon trading mechanism (Article 6) at COP26 in 2021, the adoption of 'net zero' targets by more countries, the emergence of new offsetting schemes in aviation and shipping, and the use of 'nature-based' offsets by fossil fuel companies to greenwash ongoing emissions.
• The report asserts that limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C requires a rapid, just, and equitable transition to a people-centered renewable energy system, and that emission offsets have no place in a fossil-fuel-free future.
