Community-based forest governance: Our position

A position statement from Friends of the Earth International defining community-based forest governance (CFG) and highlighting the scale of forest destruction and the populations dependent on forests.

• Forest destruction has reached an unprecedented scale and pace in recent decades, affecting primary forests that support over 1 billion Indigenous people and another 4 billion people living in adjacent or dependent communities.
• Community-based forest governance (CFG) is defined as the collective-communal regulations and practices used by communities for forest conservation and sustainable use. CFG prioritizes the protection of forests against industrial and commercial use and relies on traditional knowledge as an alternative to conventional "forest science".
