Friends of the Earth International stands in solidarity with People´s Rights Defenders in Indonesia

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, a human rights defender and legal ally to WALHI, as part of a broader pattern of escalating violence and criminalisation against environmental and human rights defenders in Indonesia.

• On the night of 12 March 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Andrie Yunus, the Deputy Coordinator of The Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was the victim of an acid attack.
• Andrie Yunus serves as a public interest lawyer collaborating with WALHI / Friends of the Earth Indonesia to provide legal aid to Indigenous Peoples, farmers, and the displaced urban poor who face violence and criminalisation while opposing environmentally destructive projects.
• The attack on Yunus is described as part of a systemic threat to democracy in Indonesia, characterised by a rising pattern of surveillance, criminalisation, and attacks against activists.
• Friends of the Earth International demands that the Government of Indonesia perform a transparent, independent, and prompt investigation to hold both the direct perpetrators and the planners of the attack accountable.
