En solidarité avec le COPINH et pour la défense des eaux du Honduras

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) expressing solidarity with the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) following armed attacks on its members and raising concerns over water privatization and foreign-funded development projects.

• Berta Zuñiga, Sotero Chavarría, and Asunción Martínez, members of the COPINH general coordination, were attacked by armed men after conducting support activities for the community of Cancire in the municipality of Santiago Puringle, La Paz department.
• COPINH reports that these aggressions occurred while the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) maintains interests in the region, with 'development' projects causing conflict between communities.
• ATALC expresses concern that strategies to privatize water reserves are being implemented under the guise of water purification projects, leading to the commodification and financialization of nature and water, a pattern previously seen in Latin America.
• ATALC and Madre Tierra/Friends of the Earth Honduras call on Honduran authorities to investigate the attacks and protect the integrity of COPINH members and other organizations defending the collective rights of indigenous peoples and peasants.
