Solidarity Statement concerning the massacre of the people of Totonicapán

The document is a solidarity statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning a massacre on 4 October 2012 in Totonicapán, Guatemala, where government actions killed eight indigenous people during a peaceful demonstration. It criticizes President Otto Perez Molina's security policies, the militarization of indigenous territories, and the implementation of large-scale development projects without local consent.

• On 4 October 2012, a peaceful demonstration organized by the 48 Cantones de Totonicapán resulted in a massacre by the Guatemalan government that killed eight indigenous people and injured dozens.
• The statement links the government's repressive security policy and the criminalization of social protests—including a previous crackdown in Santa Cruz Barillas in May 2012—to the promotion of unsustainable large-scale development projects on indigenous lands without the consent of affected populations.
