In solidarity with OFRANEH and social activists in Honduras

Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean expresses solidarity with OFRANEH and other social activists in Honduras, condemning the criminalization of land defenders and the violation of collective land rights of the Garifuna and Lenca peoples.

• At least four members of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH) have been criminalized through fabricated allegations of land usurpation in Guadalupe. These actions are described as part of processes driving the forced dispossession of Garifuna people's land for the benefit of foreign capital, despite the land being covered by a community title deed.
• The Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) has reported that the Lenca people of Río Blanco are facing threats and the presence of armed men against territory defenders.
• Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean calls on the Honduran government to guarantee land rights in accordance with the Honduran Constitution, community deeds, and ILO Convention No. 169, asserting that land rights are a prerequisite for a decent life and rights to water and a healthy environment.
