Land day marks 41 years of Israeli impunity against Palestine

A statement by Friends of the Earth International commemorating the 41st anniversary of Land Day, detailing Israeli land confiscation in Palestine and calling for an end to settlement activities.

• The first Palestinian Land Day occurred in 1976 when thousands protested the theft of Palestinian land in the northern Galilee region, resulting in 6 deaths and over 100 injuries caused by Israeli forces.
• Since 1976, Israel has confiscated more than 3000km2 of land, representing nearly half of the 6220 km2 comprising Gaza and the West Bank. Due to the construction of bypass roads, the apartheid-style wall, and illegal settlements, Palestinians now occupy only 12% of historical Palestine.
• The Israeli occupation has installed 700,000 settlers in Jerusalem and the West Bank, replacing the indigenous population. This is described as a violation of international humanitarian law, the 4th Geneva Convention, and UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which states that Israeli settlements have "no legal validity".
