In solidarity with COPINH and the defence of water in Honduras

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) expressing solidarity with the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH) following attacks on its members and coordinator, Berta Zúñiga.

• Members of the COPINH General Coordination team, specifically Berta Zúñiga, Sotero Chavarría, and Asunción Martínez, were approached by armed men in the La Paz Department after conducting work with the Cancire community in the Santiago Puringla municipality.
• COPINH asserts that the attacks occurred within a context of interests and development projects led by the US cooperation agency USAID, which the organization claims generate confrontations between communities.
• ATALC expresses concern over water privatization strategies in Honduras being implemented under the guise of municipalization and water purification, which they link to the commodification, financialization, and privatization of nature and water.
• ATALC calls on Honduran authorities to investigate the attacks, identify those responsible, and protect COPINH members and other organizations defending the collective rights of peasant and indigenous peoples against an extractivist model.
