Internationalist solidarity with the Peoples of Colombia

DANE reports that 42.5% of the population, or 21 million people, live below the financial poverty line, while the financial sector saw net profits of approximately US$ 6.3 billion from January to September 2020.
• The Colombian government's development model treats nature as a commodity for profit, prioritizing extractive activities and land dispossession. Specific concerns include the return of aerial glyphosate spraying, mining in highland páramos essential for fresh water, and the approval of the country's first fracking projects.
• There has been a severe humanitarian crisis characterized by the systematic murder of social and community leaders. INDEPAZ reports 32 massacres in 2021 and 573 murders of community leaders during the first two years of the current administration; additionally, around 270 signatories of the FARC-EP agreement have been killed in recent years.
• Security forces have committed extensive human rights violations against peaceful protesters between April 28 and May 4, 2021. Data from Temblores records 1,443 cases of police violence, 31 murders by police, 814 arbitrary arrests, and 10 instances of sexual violence by security forces.
