En solidaridad con COPINH y la defensa de las aguas en Honduras

A statement by Amigos de la Tierra de América Latina y el Caribe (ATALC) expressing solidarity with the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH) following attacks on its members, including Berta Zuñiga, Sotero Chavarría, and Asunción Martínez, in the Department of La Paz.

• Members of the COPINH coordination general, specifically Berta Zuñiga, Sotero Chavarría, and Asunción Martínez, were confronted by armed men in the Department of La Paz after providing support to the community of Cancire in the Municipality of Santiago Puringla.
• The COPINH asserts that these aggressions occur within a context involving interests from the US agency USAID and its development projects, which the organization claims create conflict between communities.
• ATALC warns against strategies to privatize water sources through 'potabilización' (water purification) and 'municipalización' (municipalization), viewing these as mechanisms for the mercantilization and financialization of nature and water in Latin America.
• ATALC calls on Honduran authorities to investigate the attacks and identify those responsible, while urging the international community to demand protection for COPINH members and other defenders of collective rights for indigenous and peasant peoples.
