Repudio al asesinato de Jehry Rivera Rivera en Costa Rica

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning the murder of indigenous leader Jehry Rivera Rivera in Costa Rica, highlighting a pattern of violence and government inaction regarding indigenous territorial rights.

• Jehry Rivera Rivera, a leader of the Naso Bröran people in Costa Rica, was murdered on February 24, 2020. Rivera Rivera had advocated for indigenous autonomy and opposed land usurpers and extractive projects, specifically the Diquís Hydroelectric Project.
• Prior to the murder, the indigenous community issued an early warning on February 23 regarding armed non-indigenous individuals intimidating residents in the Térraba communities of Palmira de Cabagra and Crun D´bonn and establishing camps on indigenous territory. Despite alerts sent to the police and the Vice Ministry of the Presidency for Political Affairs and Citizen Dialogue, the government failed to provide an effective response or enforce the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) precautionary measures (MC 321-12-2015) established on April 30, 2015, for the Térraba and Salitre territories.
• The killing of Jehry Rivera follows the March 18, 2019, murder of Sergio Rojas Ortiz, which also occurred despite warnings sent to national authorities. Friends of the Earth International calls for the Costa Rican government to implement the autonomous territorial affirmation process (territorial sanitation), enforce IACHR measures, and prosecute the perpetrators of both crimes, while noting the criminalization of social and indigenous movements such as the National Front of Indigenous Peoples.
