Solidaridad internacionalista con la comunidad garífuna de Honduras

A statement by Friends of the Earth International denouncing the kidnapping of four Garífuna community members in Honduras and the systematic violence and land dispossession faced by the Garífuna people.

• On July 18, four members of the Garífuna community of Triunfo de la Cruz in Tela, including Alberth Snaider Centeno Tomas (President of the Patronato de Triunfo de la Cruz), Milton Joel Martínez Alvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía, and Albert Sentana Thomas, were kidnapped by armed men wearing National Police clothing and vests with the insignia of the Department of Police Investigation (DPI).
• The Garífuna indigenous community in Honduras faces systematic aggression and land usurpation by banana and oil palm companies, as well as real estate and tourism developers. Specifically, the INDURA hotel complex and PUNTA IZOPO national park in the municipality of Tela have been accused of usurping land and expelling locals, while the companies MACERICA and IDETRISA are cited for illegal land possession.
• The Honduran state has failed to comply with a October 8, 2015, Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ruling regarding the community of Triunfo de la Cruz. The ruling required the state to repair damages and guarantee rights following a lawsuit filed in 2003. The required actions include the sanitation, titling, and demarcation of 2,840 hectares of ancestral territory, the return of 22 hectares held by the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Municipalidad de Tela, and the return of 98 hectares illegally held by MACERICA and IDETRISA for the Marbella and Playa Escondida housing projects.
• The document asserts that the Garífuna people were not consulted regarding corporate projects, violating the Right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 169, which Honduras ratified in 1995.
