Empêcher les entreprises de profiter de la pandémie : Stop ISDS!

A statement by Friends of the Earth International warning that the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system allows multinational corporations to pressure governments into canceling public interest measures or paying millions in compensation following COVID-19 responses.

• The Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system, found in many trade agreements, enables foreign companies to sue governments in arbitral tribunals for policies that negatively impact their profits, potentially forcing governments to reverse public interest measures or pay significant damages.
• Specific COVID-19 responses that could trigger ISDS lawsuits include the closure of businesses, the use of private hospitals, efforts to make tests and medicines affordable, and debt restructuring.
• Over 600 civil society organizations globally are calling for three specific actions: the suspension of all ongoing ISDS cases during the COVID crisis, the termination of all existing agreements containing ISDS, and a commitment to not sign future agreements that include ISDS.
