Women defending life and natural resources: Cases in Central America

This research, led by women researchers and community leaders, examines the role of women in defending territories and natural resources in Central America against extractive activities and a capitalist, patriarchal development model.

• Women in Central America face disproportionate impacts from extractive activities, such as monoculture plantations, within a context characterized by the rapid masculinization of all spaces.
• Women's resistance involves viewing the territory as an integrated holistic space and challenging a Western, capitalist, colonialist, and patriarchal development model that prioritizes limitless economic growth over life.
• By organizing to defend land, women create spaces of freedom that allow them to reclaim their rights to mobilize, resist, transform, and speak with their own voices, overcoming patriarchal societal obstacles.
