Argentine : solidarité avec la grève générale

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement on January 24, 2024, expressing solidarity with a general strike in Argentina. The strike was called by trade unions and social organizations to reject the 'Omnibus Law' and the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) introduced by President Javier Milei, which the organization claims undermine democratic, social, and environmental protections.

The government is also establishing an 'incentive regime for large investments' in sectors such as mining, oil, gas, forests, and agro-industry, and creating a national greenhouse gas emissions market based on carbon quotas.
• The statement alleges a concentration of power in the executive branch, claiming the government seeks to transfer legislative powers to the president until 2025 (potentially extending to 2027) and allow foreign borrowing without parliamentary approval.
• A new security ministry protocol has been introduced that prohibits the fundamental right to public protest, social and political organization, and freedom of expression.
