Acciones violentas en Perú contra defensores protestando en contra de un proyecto minero de Newmont

The document condemns the Peruvian government for an 'alarmante escalada de represión' involving firearms and helicopters against environmental protesters. It highlights casualties in El Espinar, Bambamarca, and Celedín, and denounces the arbitrary detention of community leader Marco Arana. The statement specifically calls on the multinational company Newmont to address the violence surrounding the Conga mining project, which threatens regional water sources.

• Government repression in Peru has resulted in multiple deaths and injuries across three locations: four deaths and dozens injured in El Espinar (Cusco), one death in Bambamarca, and three deaths with dozens injured in Celedín (Cajamarca).
• The Conga mining project, managed by the multinational company Newmont, is identified as a threat to the region's water sources, leading to protests and subsequent state violence.
• The Peruvian government has utilized 'medidas de excepción' and declared states of emergency to restrict liberties during these environmental conflicts, including the arbitrary detention of Marco Arana from GRUFIDES.
