Solidarité internationaliste avec le Mozambique

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement of solidarity with the people of Mozambique, condemning state violence and electoral fraud following the October 9 elections. The organization calls for an end to repression, the restoration of democratic rights, and a shift away from neoliberal economic policies that exacerbate poverty and inequality.

• Following elections on October 9, the ruling Frelimo party was declared the winner by a large majority, but opposition parties and observers reported irregularities such as ballot stuffing and the illegal exclusion of opposition observers. This led to nationwide protests and a brutal state crackdown resulting in at least 34 confirmed deaths.
• State violence has escalated in the capital, Maputo, and other cities, characterized by the use of live ammunition, illegal detentions, and torture, particularly targeting youth and children. On October 19, two opposition figures were assassinated, including the legal advisor to the main presidential candidate.
• Despite being rich in natural resources, 73% of Mozambicans live in poverty. The document attributes this to neoliberal policies imposed by the IMF under Frelimo, as well as the export of wealth from mining, land use, and fossil fuel projects that have displaced rural communities and increased inequality.
• Friends of the Earth International and Justiça Ambiental (JA!) demand that the Mozambican state withdraw police forces, investigate police killings, respect constitutional rights to protest and expression (including ending mobile internet restrictions), and transition to an equitable development model that rejects neoliberalism.
