Internationalist solidarity to condemn systematic violence against the Colombian people

Friends of the Earth International denounces a surge of systematic violence in Colombia as of November 2020, reporting over 280 murders in 73 massacres. The statement highlights the targeting of peasants, indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendant communities, and criticizes the government of Ivan Duque for its failure to protect grassroots leaders and its reluctance to implement the 2016 peace agreements with FARC-EP. • As of November 2020, reports indicate that more than 280 people have been killed in 73 massacres in Colombia. This violence has been intensified by the right-wing government of Ivan Duque's control and repression measures during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically targeting youth, women, grassroots organisations, peasants, indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendant communities.
• Violence is concentrated in territories with weak state presence, often characterized by illegal extractive activities, illicit crop cultivation, and control by paramilitary armed groups. In 2020, more than 24 individuals aged 15 to 26 were murdered across urban and rural areas, and the National Police and military have been accused of physical and sexual violence against women and girls.
• The Colombian government has failed to respond effectively to warnings about the assassination of 95 grassroots leaders and over 100 demobilised FARC-EP members. Furthermore, the Duque administration has shown little willingness to adhere to the 2016 peace agreements signed with the FARC-EP insurgency.
• Following the death of a citizen in Bogotá due to excessive police force, mobilisations on 9 September resulted in 13 additional deaths. These killings are alleged to have been carried out by the police and civilians armed by the police force.
