Internationalist solidarity to condemn systematic violence against the Colombian people

A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning systematic violence, selective assassinations, and impunity in Colombia, specifically targeting social movements, human rights defenders, and marginalized communities.

• As of November 2020, Friends of the Earth International reports that over 280 people have been killed in 73 massacres in Colombia. This violence is noted to systematically target grassroots organisations of women, youth, and children, as well as Afro-descendant communities, indigenous peoples, and peasants.
• The document highlights a lack of government response to warnings about targeted killings. A call launched on 29 April 2020 by the Continental Platform for Democracy and Against Neoliberalism, supported by over 200 organisations, denounced the assassination of 100+ demobilised FARC-EP members and 95 grassroots leaders, yet the Colombian government failed to deploy preventive security measures.
• Violence in 2020 has concentrated in territories with weak State presence, often characterised by illegal extractive activities, control by paramilitary groups, and illicit crop cultivation. Specific incidents include the murder of over 24 youth aged 15 to 26 since August 2020, and allegations of physical and sexual violence against women and girls by the National Police and the military.
• The statement condemns the actions of the National Police in Bogotá, where the use of excessive force led to the death of a citizen and subsequent mobilisations on 9 September that resulted in 13 additional deaths. These deaths are alleged to have been perpetrated by police and police-armed civilians.
• Friends of the Earth International accuses the administration of Ivan Duque of failing to recognise the systematic nature of the violence and showing a lack of willingness to uphold the 2016 peace agreements signed with the FARC-EP insurgency.
