Solidarité internationaliste avec Wadas

This statement by Friends of the Earth International expresses solidarity with the residents of Wadas, Indonesia, following a police and military crackdown on February 8, 2022. The violence is linked to a long-standing conflict over an andesite mining project intended to support the construction of the Bener dam.

• On February 8, 2022, approximately 250 police and military personnel entered Wadas village in the Bener district of Central Java, Indonesia, to oversee land measurements by the Purworejo agency (BPN Purworejo) for a mining project. This operation resulted in violence, including arbitrary arrests of at least 63 people, including 13 children, and attacks on residents in their homes and mosques.
• The conflict in Wadas began in 2018 when the government designated 114 hectares of land, located about eight kilometers northwest of the village, for andesite mining to provide materials for the Bener dam. Local residents oppose the project due to potential negative environmental impacts and the loss of productive agricultural land and hills that serve as water catchment areas with 23 springs and prevent landslides.
• The violence in Wadas is presented as part of a broader pattern of police repression against environmental defenders in Indonesia. Between 2021 and 2022, WALHI recorded at least 182 residents facing criminalization for protecting their lands. Other cited incidents include a December 27, 2021, crackdown on women protesting mining in Pasar Seluma (Bengkulu) and a February 12, 2022, violent response to a gold mine protest in Parigi Moutong (Central Sulawesi) that left one person dead and 59 arrested.
• Friends of the Earth International and WALHI demand that state administrators respect the Constitutional Court's decision to end the land acquisition for the Bener dam, that the Governor of Central Java revoke the implantation permit for the Wadas mine, and that the Indonesian National Police cease the excessive use of force and evaluate the use of firearms.
