Stop à l’expulsion : solidarité avec les habitants de l’île de Rempang, Indonésie

Friends of the Earth International and WALHI denounce the violent repression of residents on Rempang Island, Indonesia, who are protesting a national strategic program to build an "eco-city" without local consent.

• On September 7, 2023, police actions on Rempang Island to implement field measures led to violent clashes, resulting in hundreds of injuries, the use of tear gas that endangered schoolchildren, at least 20 arrests, and 8 residents being incriminated.
• The proposed "eco-city" development on Rempang Island, managed by BP Batam and announced in August 2023, requires the displacement of residents who have lived in 16 traditional Melayu villages (kampong melayu tua) since 1834.
• The situation on Rempang Island is part of a broader pattern of non-inclusive development and police repression in Indonesia, with similar conflicts previously occurring in Wadas (2022) due to a dam project in the Bener district of Central Java, and in Kulonprogo regarding a new international airport in Yogyakarta.
• Friends of the Earth International and WALHI are demanding that the Indonesian government cancel the Rempang eco-city plan, stop police deployment on the island, remove the regional police chiefs of Riau province and Batam, and establish a permanent moratorium on national strategic projects on indigenous and local community lands.
