Solidarité internationaliste aux défenseurs assassinés à Vale do Javari, Brésil

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning the murders of indigenous activist Bruno Araújo Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips in the Vale do Javari region of Brazil, calling for international pressure on the Brazilian government to investigate the crimes and protect indigenous territories.

• Indigenous activist Bruno Araújo Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips, a correspondent for The Guardian, disappeared on June 5 and were confirmed murdered by the Brazilian federal police on June 15. They were last seen traveling from the Ribeirinha São Rafael community toward Atalaia do Norte while working on a project with the Union of Indigenous Organizations of Vale do Javari (UNIVAJA).
• The Vale do Javari indigenous reserve, established in 2001 and home to 26 indigenous peoples, faces a hostile environment characterized by drug traffickers, illegal loggers, and miners ('garimpeiros'). This situation has led to land grabbing, threats against human rights defenders, and reports of sexual abuse of children.
• The management of the National Indigenous People's Foundation (FUNAI) under Marcelo Augusto Xavier since July 2019 has raised concerns, including allegations of encouraging violence and genocide against local populations. Bruno Araújo, a former FUNAI official, requested a detachment from the agency in late 2019 due to concerns regarding the foundation's profiling.
• Violence against indigenous peoples and their territories has increased under the government of Jair Bolsonaro, which Friends of the Earth International describes as an 'extermination project'. UNIVAJA considers the murders of Pereira and Phillips to be political crimes because both were human rights defenders working for the indigenous peoples of the Javari Valley.
• Friends of the Earth International demands that the Brazilian government pursue transparent investigations into the material and intellectual authors of the murders under international human rights oversight, sanction those responsible for intrusions into the Vale do Javari territory, and guarantee indigenous rights to land and self-determination.
