Murder of Indigenous peoples in Philippines as blatant human rights abuses continue

A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning the murder of Datu Victor Danyan and seven members of his community by the Philippine armed forces on 3 December 2017, linking the violence to corporate interests and land disputes.

• On 3 December 2017, the Philippine armed forces murdered Datu Victor Danyan, two of his sons, his son-in-law, and four other community members in their ancestral territory in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.
• The violence is linked to a struggle by the T’boli–Manubo Sdaf Claimants Organization (TAMASCO) against Consunji-owned companies that have encroached on ancestral territory for coal operations and coffee plantations. A 25-year coffee plantation permit that expired in 2016 was extended through "legal manipulation" without the free prior and informed consent of the T’boli-Manobo communities.
• The Philippine military attempted to justify the killings by labeling Datu Victor a communist rebel, occurring one week after the Duterte government suspended peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines and announced a crackdown on suspected rebels. However, Datu Victor had sought legal and peaceful redress for corporate landgrabs since 1991.
