Fossil futures built on a house of cards – report on the voluntary carbon market

A report by Friends of the Earth International examining how fossil fuel actors utilize the voluntary carbon market to sustain the fossil fuel economy through offsets.

• The demand for carbon offsets is expected to increase significantly due to the establishment of a global carbon trading mechanism via Article 6 at COP26 in 2021, the pursuit of 'net zero' targets by countries, the creation of new offset schemes for aviation and shipping, and the use of 'nature-based' offsets by fossil fuel corporations to greenwash emissions.
• The report asserts that carbon offsets are incompatible with the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C, which instead requires a rapid, equitable, and people-centered transition to a renewable energy system.
