Solidarité avec les communautés de Santander, Colombie

Friends of the Earth International expresses solidarity with communities in Santander, Colombia, protesting an open-pit coal mine by French company Colcco S.A. The organization condemns the use of threats and military targeting by the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC) against environmental defenders and urges the Colombian government to revoke the mining permit and protect local activists.

• Since January 9, 2023, residents of the municipalities of Barrancabermeja, San Vicente, and Carmen de Chucurí in the Magdalena Medio region of Santander have protested to demand the cancellation of an environmental permit granted to the French mining company Colcco S.A. for an open-pit coal mine intended for 30 years of operation. Although the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development announced on January 25 that it would begin the process of revoking the permit issued by the National Authority of Environmental Permits, no concrete action has been taken.
• Environmental leaders and protesters are facing threats, intimidation, and surveillance. Specifically, brochures and a video from the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), also known as the Clan del Golfo, have been used to designate those mobilizing against the mining project, as well as individuals not involved in the strike, as military targets.
