Solidarité avec les communautés de Santander, Colombie

Friends of the Earth International is calling on the Colombian government to protect environmental defenders in the Magdalena Medio region of Santander who are facing threats and intimidation from groups like the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC) while protesting an open-cast coal mine operated by the French company Colcco S.A.

• Since January 9, 2023, residents of Barrancabermeja, San Vicente, and Carmen de Chucurí in the Magdalena Medio region of Santander have demanded the cancellation of an environmental permit granted to the French mining company Colcco S.A. for a 30-year open-cast coal mine.
• Environmental leaders and protesters are facing surveillance and intimidation, including the use of brochures and videos from the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), also known as Clan del Golfo, which designate those mobilizing against the mining project as military targets.
• Although the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development announced on January 25, 2023, that it would begin the process of revoking the environmental permit, no concrete action has been taken yet.
