Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, a human rights defender and legal ally to environmental communities in Indonesia, calling for an urgent government investigation and international oversight.

• On the night of March 12, 2026, Andrie Yunus, the deputy coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was the victim of an acid attack in Jakarta, Indonesia.
• Andrie Yunus is a human rights defender who provides legal assistance to Indigenous Peoples, farmers, and displaced urban poor who oppose environmentally destructive projects, working in collaboration with WALHI / Friends of the Earth Indonesia.
• There is a systemic threat to democracy and human rights in Indonesia, characterized by an increasing trend of attacks, surveillance, and criminalization of human rights activists.
• Friends of the Earth International demands that the Indonesian government conduct a transparent, independent, and exhaustive investigation to ensure accountability for both the perpetrators and the planners of the attack.
• The organization urges the UN Human Rights Council and UN Special Rapporteurs on human rights defenders and on human rights and the environment to monitor the case and contact the Indonesian government.
