FOEI declaration of support to the World March of Women

Friends of the Earth International (FOEI) issued a declaration denouncing the illegal deportation of Eva Anadón Moreno, a member of the World March of Women's International Secretariat, by Mozambican authorities following a protest in Maputo.

• On 18th March 2016, the World March of Women (WMW) held a public action in Maputo to protest a decision by the Mozambican Ministry of Education requiring girl students in secondary schools to wear ankle-length skirts to "avoid provoking their male professors".
• During the 18th March protest, police used physical force and pointed weapons at activists, including young women and girls, and arrested five people, including Eva Anadón Moreno and Suzete of the WMW International Secretariat.
• The five arrested activists were detained for over six hours, during which police used verbal aggression and attempted to divide the group along racial lines by claiming foreign national women were leading the intervention.
• Eva Anadón Moreno, a Spanish national residing in Mozambique, was illegally detained on 29th March and subsequently deported to Madrid via Dubai on 30th March, accompanied by a Mozambican policeman.
• FOEI characterizes the actions of the Mozambique authorities as a "political instrumentalisation" of the case intended to intimidate social movements and criminalize civil society mobilization and legal protest.
