Challenging corporate impunity

This publication is the official contribution from Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific region for the third session of the Intergovernmental Working Group (IGWG) on Transnational Corporations and other business enterprises with respect to Human Rights, held in October 2017 in Geneva.

• The document provides proposals for United Nations member states to use when developing the structure and elements of a new binding instrument referred to as the UN Treaty.
• The proposals are based on community struggles and member group efforts to challenge the immunity of International Financial Institutions (IFIs), specifically naming the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
• The contribution highlights corporate crimes by financiers and transnational corporations within the Indonesian plantations sector and advocates for the UN Treaty to include and implement protections for environmental and human rights defenders, with a specific focus on women defenders.
