Internationalist solidarity with the Guaraní Kaiowá peoples

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning a June 24, 2022, massacre of Guaraní Kaiowá Indigenous Peoples by military police in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, during an illegal eviction from the Tekoha Guapoy Mirin Tujury territory.

• On June 24, 2022, the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police conducted a 12-hour illegal eviction operation in the Tekoha Guapoy Mirin Tujury indigenous territory, which is settled by approximately 150 people. The operation involved hundreds of police agents, vehicles, and a helicopter, resulting in one death and at least 10 injuries, including a child shot with a 5.56 rifle, a weapon restricted to the army in Brazil.
• The Aty Guasu, a high assembly of the Guaraní Kaiowá Peoples, has labeled the June 24 event as the "Guapoy Massacre," drawing a parallel to the Caarapó Massacre that occurred on June 14, 2016.
• The Guaraní Kaiowá, one of Brazil's largest ethnic groups outside the Amazonia region, face ongoing conflict as they attempt to reclaim ancestral territories that are currently fenced in by agribusiness. Recent tensions include the occupation of the Borda da Mata Farm, where the owner is accused of illegal timber extraction and deforestation, and reports of gunmen attacks resulting in the disappearance of two young women.
• The statement alleges that the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police act as a "private militia" for local farmers and that the government of Jair Bolsonaro has exacerbated the vulnerability of Indigenous Peoples by defunding and diverting the functions of the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI). This has led to a paralysis in the demarcation of indigenous territories and a lack of response to the demands of those in reclaimed territories.
