Acciones violentas contra las comunidades afectadas por el Proyecto Hidroeléctrico de El Quimbo en Huila, Colombia

A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning a violent police eviction of fishing families protesting the El Quimbo Hydroelectric Project in Huila, Colombia, and calling for the protection of local community rights.

• Police carried out a violent eviction of fishing families who were peacefully located on the Magdalena River near the El Quimbo hydroelectric works, resulting in three injuries, including a young person who lost an eye due to a tear gas canister.
• Affected communities, represented by Asoquimbo and Censat Agua Viva, have pursued legal actions under the Colombian Constitution and legislation to stop the project due to irregularities and failures regarding the environmental license issued by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
• Friends of the Earth International urges the Colombian government to follow World Commission on Dams recommendations, approve a requested Environmental Public Hearing, and protect the rights of those affected by the El Quimbo project, while supporting a proposal to declare the area an Agro-food Peasant Reserve.
