Black Lives Matter

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning systemic police violence, environmental racism, and state-sanctioned violence against Black people in the United States, while expressing solidarity with global movements against systemic racism.

• Friends of the Earth International condemns the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery, stating that systemic police violence in the United States represents a massive abuse of state power and serial gross human rights violations. The organization also identifies environmental racism and the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on Black communities as evidence of violent neglect toward communities of colour in the U.S.
• The organization criticizes the Trump administration for its violent authoritarianism and implicit support for white nationalism, arguing that calls to use deadly force against dissenters signal a descent toward fascism and encourage repressive regimes globally.
• Friends of the Earth International, along with member groups in 73 countries, supports the uprisings in the United States and calls for the U.S. to address historical injustices stemming from the genocide of Indigenous Peoples and the enslavement of Africans.
