Condemnation of murder of environmental lawyer in Philippines

Friends of the Earth International condemns the February 15, 2017, assassination of environmental lawyer Mia Manuelita Cumba Masacariñas-Green in Tagbilaran, Bohol, and calls for an urgent government investigation into the killing.

• Environmental lawyer Mia Manuelita Cumba Masacariñas-Green, aged 49 and a board member of The Environmental Legal Assistance Centre (ELAC), was assassinated on February 15, 2017, in Tagbilaran, Bohol, while driving her three children.
• Police investigations into the murder identified two suspected gunmen and a possible mastermind who owns a beach resort in Bohol; the killing is reportedly linked to a conflict between the resort owner and a client of Masacariñas-Green.
• Reports indicate that 112 environmental campaigners and human rights defenders have been murdered in the Philippines over the previous 15 years.
