Declaración de ATI por el Día Internacional de la Mujer 2016

A statement by Friends of the Earth International (ATI) issued on International Women's Day 2016, condemning the murder of Lenca indigenous leader Berta Cáceres in Honduras and calling for an end to state and corporate violence against women and environmental defenders.

• Berta Cáceres, a Lenca indigenous leader, community organizer, and environmental justice activist, was murdered in her home in the department of Intibucá, Honduras, in the early hours of March 3, 2016. During the same attack, Mexican activist Gustavo Castro Soto of Friends of the Earth Mexico was seriously injured.
• Since the 2009 coup d'état, Honduras has seen an increase in attacks against peaceful dissent. The government is accused of collaborating with transnational corporations to seize common goods and territories, implementing mining and dam projects without consulting affected populations, and persecuting organizations like the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), which Berta Cáceres co-founded in 2003.
• The document argues that environmental justice is unattainable without ending violence against women and the exploitation of their productive and reproductive labor. It posits that the patriarchal, racist, and capitalist system uses violence to control both women's bodies and community territories, treating both as infinite resources for elite interests.
• Friends of the Earth member groups planned urgent actions at Honduran embassies worldwide to demand immediate justice for Berta Cáceres. The organization, aligning with COPINH, demands an independent investigation with international judges and experts, an end to impunity, and a stop to foreign-supported paramilitary activity and the persecution of indigenous rights defenders in Honduras.
