How to achieve a successful Global Biodiversity Framework

A statement by Friends of the Earth International outlining demands for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework to ensure the protection of nature and avoid the failures of the previous Aichi targets.

• The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) failed to achieve its 20 "Aichi targets" established in the 2011-2020 framework for action. In response, the CBD is developing a Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, with a landmark summit (CBD COP15) scheduled for October 2020 to implement transformative changes.
• Friends of the Earth International, collaborating with the CBD Alliance, argues that the first draft of the Post-2020 Framework lacked ambition and detail. They advocate for a framework based on a rights-based approach, global equity, financing, the mainstreaming of biodiversity across national governments, accountability measures, and the promotion of agroecology and community-based solutions.
• To ensure success, the framework must reject voluntary commitments, corporate conflicts of interest, and "false solutions" such as corporate social responsibility schemes, voluntary certification, or offsetting. It should also exclude purely technological solutions and financing for projects that are environmentally destructive.
