Condemnation of the assassination of Mama Fikile Ntshangase in South Africa

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning the assassination of Mama Fikile Ntshangase, an environmental activist in South Africa who opposed the expansion of the Tendele coal mine.

• Mama Fikile Ntshangase, Vice-Chairperson of a sub-committee of the Mfolozi Community Environmental Justice Organisation (MCEJO), was shot dead by four gunmen in her home on 22 October 2020. She had been vocal against the operations and proposed expansion of the Tendele coal mine, owned by Tendele Coal Mining (Pty) Ltd (a subsidiary of Petmin), which would have displaced 21 families from ancestral land.
• Friends of the Earth International and groundWork have called upon South African authorities, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Police, to conduct an impartial and thorough investigation into the murder of Mama Fikile and other attacks on community rights defenders.
• The document asserts that human rights abuses against environmental and political activists are rising across Africa as transnational corporations expand mining, oil, and gas activities. It claims that states are increasingly influenced by corporations, leading to corporate impunity and the criminalisation of those exercising rights to protest and freedom of expression.
• Friends of the Earth International demands the creation of a binding instrument that requires States to regulate transnational corporations and business enterprises to end the impunity of corporations and the intellectual authors of such crimes.
