Israel’s attempt to demolish Palestinian village Khan al Ahmar contravenes international law

Friends of the Earth International issues a statement condemning the attempted demolition of the Palestinian Bedouin village of Khan al Ahmar in the occupied West Bank, asserting that such actions contravene international law and facilitate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements.

• Israeli forces have attempted to forcibly displace residents of the Bedouin village of Khan al Ahmar, resulting in reports from the Palestinian Red Crescent of 35 people wounded, four of whom required hospitalization, and reports from B’Tselem of nine arrests.
• Khan al Ahmar is located in Area C of the West Bank within the E1 settlement block, positioned between the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim and the suburb of Kfar Adumim. The E1 plan aims to connect Ma’ale Adumim to annexed East Jerusalem, which would result in the confiscation of large areas of Palestinian land for Israeli settlers.
• The residents of Khan al Ahmar, members of the Jahalin tribe, were previously forcibly relocated from Tel Arad in the Negev Desert in 1951. They lived on land leased from a private landowner in Anata until it was expropriated as State land in 1975, subsequently designated as an industrial zone and then zoned for the Ma’ale Adumim settlement.
• The community of Khan al Ahmar lacks basic infrastructure, including a sewage system, electricity network, and proper roads, and suffers from a severe deficiency in welfare, education, and health services.
• On 5 March 2017, demolition orders were issued for all structures in Khan al Ahmar, including the clinic, mosque, school, barns, and homes, requiring their removal within seven days. Friends of the Earth International characterizes these actions and the broader settlement policy as violations of international law.
