Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira is not a member of Friends of the Earth International

Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) has issued a statement to distinguish itself and its official Brazilian member group, Núcleo Amigos da Terra Brasil, from Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira. FoEI asserts that the latter organization, led by Roberto Smeraldi, uses the 'Friends of the Earth' name without authorization to promote projects that undermine FoEI's work. Specifically, FoEI opposes the 'Forest Dialogue' proposal promoted by Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira, which suggests market-based mechanisms and changes to Brazil's forest protection law, while FoEI's member group campaigns to prevent changes to the forest protection code against agribusiness lobby interests.

• Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira is not a member or ally of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), despite using the name 'Friends of the Earth Brazilian Amazonia'.
• The organization led by Roberto Smeraldi is promoting 'the Forest Dialogue', a joint proposal with the pulp/paper sector and NGOs that advocates for market-based forest protection mechanisms and modifications to forest protection law.
• The official FoEI member group in Brazil, Núcleo Amigos da Terra Brasil, is campaigning alongside La Vía Campesina and other networks to protect Brazil's forest protection code from changes sought by the agribusiness lobby.
