In solidarity with the Narmada valley struggle in India

A statement by Friends of the Earth International expressing solidarity with activists and families affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam project in India's Narmada valley, highlighting a humanitarian crisis involving thousands of families facing eviction without rehabilitation.

• The Sardar Sarovar Dam, completed in 2017 and the world's second-largest concrete dam, has left nearly 32,000 families without compensation despite the project's completion. The Narmada Control Authority's plans to fill the reservoir to its full level threaten to submerge hundreds of villages, while reports suggest corruption in water management and incomplete canal networks.
• An indefinite fast started on 25 August by Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan and six other activists led to a government agreement on the ninth day. The local state government committed to efforts to open dam gates, postpone reservoir filling, organize village-level camps for claims, and provide benefits to 115 previously ineligible families. On 13 September, Chief Minister Kamal Nath requested a meeting with the Narmada Control Authority to address resettlement and rehabilitation.
• The Narmada struggle influenced the World Bank to withdraw financing for the dam project in the early 1990s and led to the creation of the Inspection Panel, which was the first accountability mechanism for any multilateral bank.
