International Women’s Day 2016 Statement

A statement by Friends of the Earth International issued on International Women's Day 2016, condemning the murder of indigenous Lenca leader Berta Cáceres in Honduras and calling for an end to state-level violence against environmental and human rights defenders.

• Berta Cáceres, an indigenous Lenca leader and co-founder of the National Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), was murdered in her home in the Intibuca department of Honduras on March 3, 2016. Mexican activist Gustavo Castro Soto was also injured in the same attack.
• The document describes a widening crackdown on peaceful dissent in Honduras since a 2009 coup, where the government is accused of assisting transnational corporations in the appropriation of territories and the commons through mining and damming projects conducted without proper consultation.
• Friends of the Earth International links environmental justice to the elimination of violence against women and the exploitation of their reproductive and productive work, arguing that both nature and women's work are treated as infinite resources for exploitation by elite groups within a patriarchal, racist capitalist system.
• Supporting the demands of COPINH, Friends of the Earth International calls for an independent investigation into Berta Cáceres' assassination involving international experts, an end to impunity, and a stop to paramilitary activities and training in Honduras supported by foreign governments.
