The Asian Development Bank must end its 50 year addiction to coal

A statement by Friends of the Earth International criticizing the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for its continued financing of coal projects despite the risks of climate change and local environmental destruction.

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has invested more than $3 billion in coal projects over the last ten years, making it the third largest multilateral public financier of coal infrastructure.
• The $450 million investment in the 4,000-megawatt Tata Mundra Ultra Mega Coal plant in Gujarat, India, resulted in environmental harm and health damage due to a lack of community consultation and failure to follow waste and pollution management strategies.
• The Tata Mundra plant is estimated to be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in India, with coal dust contaminating agriculture and infrastructure polluting drinking water sources.
• Friends of the Earth Asia-Pacific and other social movements are demanding the withdrawal of the ADB's 'legal immunity for investments' to allow affected communities to sue the bank for the impacts of its coal funding.
• The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), despite claiming to be 'green, clean, lean', has a draft energy strategy that allows for the consideration of coal-fired power plants if they replace less efficient capacity.
