Asesinato de pueblos indígenas en Filipinas: violaciones flagrantes de los derechos humanos prosiguen

A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning the killing of Datu Victor Danyan and seven members of his community by the Philippine armed forces on December 3, 2017, in the context of land disputes involving the Consunji company.

• On December 3, 2017, the Philippine armed forces killed Datu Victor Danyan, two of his children, his son-in-law, and four other community members in their ancestral territory in Lago Sebu, South Cotabato.
• The victims belonged to the T’boli–Manubo Sdaf Claimants Organization (TAMASCO) and had been fighting against human rights violations by the Consunji company, which invaded ancestral lands for mining and coffee plantations.
• The killing of Datu Victor occurred one year after the Consunji company received a 25-year permit extension for coffee plantations, which had expired in 2016. This extension was reportedly granted through judicial manipulation and without the free, prior, and informed consent of the T’boli-Manobo communities.
• The Philippine military justified the killings by labeling Datu Victor as a communist insurgent, a claim the document rejects by stating Datu Victor had used peaceful and legal means since 1991 to seek reparations for corporate land grabbing.
• Friends of the Earth International calls on the Duterte government to cancel mining and coffee plantation permits within TAMASCO ancestral territories and to prosecute those responsible for the attacks on the T’Boli-Manobo communities.
