Solidarity with the general strike in Argentina

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement on January 24, 2024, expressing solidarity with a general strike in Argentina. • The government's environmental policies enable the financialization of nature through the creation of a "domestic greenhouse gas emission market". This system allows for the sale of carbon quotas between sectors, a practice the document asserts has historically failed to reduce emissions and encourages harmful offsetting.
• The statement alleges a concentration of power in the executive branch that violates the national constitution, including the ability to incur foreign debt without parliamentary approval and the transfer of legislative powers to the president until 2025, potentially extending to 2027.
• A new Protocol from the Ministry of Security is cited as prohibiting the fundamental rights to public demonstration, social and political organization, and freedom of expression.
