Ruée sur le gaz, violations des droits humains, dégradation du climat, attaques de rebelles, zone à risque de Covid

A statement by Friends of the Earth International and Justiça Ambiental (JA!) denouncing the social, environmental, and human rights impacts of the gas industry in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. The document calls for an immediate end to gas extraction, the release of disappeared activists and journalists, and international accountability for multinational corporations.

• The gas industry in Cabo Delgado, involving companies such as Eni, Total, Shell, and ExxonMobil, has led to significant human rights violations and economic hardship. Over 550 families have been forced from their homes, and the land provided as compensation is only one-tenth the size of their original plots.
• The region is experiencing severe instability characterized by rebel attacks and a militarized government response. Over 100,000 people have been displaced, and the military is accused of protecting multinational corporations rather than the population, following requests from Exxon Mobil and Total for increased troop deployment in February.
• Gas projects threaten biodiversity and public health. Specifically, extraction activities risk irreversibly destroying coral and fish species in the Quirimbas Archipelago, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Additionally, the Total construction site was linked to the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Mozambique, with Total employees accounting for two-thirds of the country's cases within two weeks.
• There are reports of severe repression against those reporting on the gas industry. Journalist Ibrahimo Abu Mbaruco disappeared on April 7 after being arrested by the military, and activist M. Selemane disappeared on May 20 after denouncing military brutality.
• Despite the presence of the international fossil fuel industry, Mozambique's development remains low, ranking 180th out of 189 on the Human Development Index in 2018, with only one-third of the population having access to electricity.
