Stop the repression in Argentina

Friends of the Earth International issues a statement condemning the repression of socio-environmental, feminist, labour, and Indigenous Peoples’ movements in Argentina following a demonstration on 12 June 2024.

• A demonstration on 12 June resulted in over 600 injuries and 35 arbitrary detentions, with four individuals remaining in maximum security federal prisons. Detainees reported abuse including hitting, forced undressing, and the use of pepper spray, and face charges of terrorism and attempted coup d’état.
• Under Javier Milei’s government, Argentina has seen the poverty rate rise to 55.5% and extreme poverty to 17.5%. The government is accused of attacking workers and national sovereignty via the flexibilisation of labour law and the use of an "Anti-Protest Protocol" involving the Armed Forces, water tanks, and rubber bullets.
• The document highlights a broader pattern of state violence and criminalisation of protest, including the suspension of subsidised food deliveries to community kitchens and a media plan to stigmatise organised social movements.
