Comunidades de San José del Golfo y San Pedro Ayampuc en Resistencia Pacífica “La Puya”

A statement by Friends of the Earth International denouncing a police operation on May 23, 2014, against communities resisting the 'Progreso VII derivada' mining project in Guatemala.

• On May 23, 2014, approximately 500 police officers using riot gear and heavy weaponry conducted an operation to force machinery into the 'Progreso VII derivada' mine, where residents of San José del Golfo and San Pedro Ayampuc had maintained a protest since March 2, 2012.
• The police operation resulted in more than 25 injured residents, including a woman three months pregnant who suffered a skull trauma from a tear gas canister; 11 police officers were also reported injured.
• The document holds the government of General Otto Pérez Molina, Minister of Interior Mauricio López Bonilla, and National Civil Police Director Telémaco Pérez responsible for excessive force, and criticizes the 'Law of Circulation on Roads Free of Any Type of Obstacles' (Decree 8-2014) for prioritizing free movement over the right to life and resistance.
• The statement calls for the cancellation of the mining license for the project, asserting that independent experts have found the company's environmental impact study to be fraudulent and warn of future social and environmental disasters.
