Solidaridad con CEIBA

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning violence and intimidation against CEIBA – Amigos de la Tierra Guatemala and the National Network in Defense of Food Sovereignty of Guatemala (REDSAG).

• On February 25, the offices of CEIBA – Amigos de la Tierra Guatemala and REDSAG were targeted in an incident where computer equipment was stolen, while other valuables and money were left behind, suggesting the act was not a common crime.
• CEIBA communicator Óscar Gálvez was targeted in an intimidatory attack by two individuals on a motorcycle, one of whom used a gun to demand a briefcase containing a laptop with information related to CEIBA and its partner organizations.
• These attacks are viewed as part of a broader escalation of intimidation against environmental organizations in the region. CEIBA and REDSAG are noted for their work in Guatemala defending Indigenous Peoples' and community rights, specifically through community consultations to declare territories free of destructive projects like large hydroelectric projects and mining.
